Exposing Attacks on Democracy

As demographic changes put non-Hispanic white Americans on the verge of being a minority in the U.S., our country faces historic attacks against the very existence of a multiracial democracy. Our deep, data-driven investigative reporting about voting rights, immigration, the criminal justice system, and the powerful interests behind government decisions draws on the context of history to confront society’s ongoing failure to live up to the promise of “equal protection under the law” and “one person, one vote.”

IN-DEPTH investigations

Who Counts?

Our investigation found that 26 states — all controlled by Republicans — have made access to voting and political representation less equal since the 2020 election. We found Jim Crow-era laws that disproportionately keep Black people from voting and other inequities in election and political systems in all 50 states.

We made public a dataset showing employers the federal government investigated for wrongfully underpaying workers.

Our dataset of polling place locations for multiple years of elections across the country is available to do your own analysis.
